A Study of the Relationship between Hardiness and Compliance of Self? Care of Chronic Illness Patients

Abstract
This study was attempted to analyze the relation-ship between hardiness and compliance: of self care of hemodialysis patients. The subjects were 91 patients under hemodialysis therapy with chronic renal failure at 2 university hospitals, 1 general hospital in Kwang j u city.
The data were collected from April 4 to 26, 1994, by means of questionnaire.
The instruments used for this study were the hardiness scale developed by* Pollock and the compliance of self care scale developed by researcher.
The data were analyzed by t test, ANOVA, Pearson¢¥s correlation coefficient and Stepwise multiple regression, using the SAS program.
The results are summarized as follows.
1. There was not significant correlation between hardiness and compliance of self care.
2. There was significant correlation between knowledge of hemodialysis management and compliance of self care (r:= .4017, p< .0001).
3. In the relationship between socialdemographic and therapeutic characteristics and hardiness were significant difference in religion (F= 3.80, p< .01), period of hemodialysis therapy(F=3.09, p< .01), frequency of hospitalizations (F=3.91, p< . 01).
4. In the relationship between socialdemographic and therapeutic characteristics and knowledge of hemodialysis management were significant difference in family income(F=2.90, p< .03), period of hemodialysis therapy(F=3.25, p< .01), frequency of hospitalizations (F=4.51, p< .01).
5. In the relationship between socialdemographic and therapeutic characteristics and compliance of self care were not significant difference.
6. The main factors influencing on compliance of self care were knowledge of hemodialysis management(16.14%), control(4.91%).
